Dear Murphy: Why are the cats left out?

tumblr_nfjhngPL591u36ebqo1_1280Dear Murphy,

With all the Oscar buzz in the air, it’s hard to ignore the fact that cats are rarely represented in film.  The dog always gets the major roles, red carpet appearances, and receives all the accolades & attention.  We felines feel left out! We love to perform and act too, how can we get the same attention as the dogs in film?

Signed,
Catress

Dear Catress,

I completely understand your point. It does seem as though dogs are more widely celebrated in Hollywood. However,orangey-cat-in-breakfast-at-tiffanys I can think of several iconic roles in film, played by none other than the cat! For example: Crookshanks from “Harry Potter”, played a wonderful multi-faceted cat,  Mr. Bigglesworth from “Austin Powers,” now that was hilarious. Then there is Church from “Pet Cemetery,” a brilliant & scary antagonist, Mr. Jinx from “Meet the Parents,” a very talented cat, and don’t forget Cat (aka Orangey) from “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”, the only cat to win a Patsy award– TWICE!
Last, we cannot ignore the major achievements of fictional cats. There are so many amazing characters who will be remembered forever!

+ Mufasa from “The Lion King”
+ Aslan from “The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe”
Lucifer from Cinderella
+ Puss in Boots from “Shrek”
+ Umm, Cat Woman from “Batman”
+ The iconic Garfield!
+ Bagheera from “The Jungle Book”

I agree that cats should be given more prominent roles in Hollywood, and I hope that happens soon. However, don’t forget about the amazing achievements your fellow felines have already made!

Bark bark,
Murphy
