When Bill Berloni was a tech apprentice at a small theatre in Connecticut, no one else wanted to train a dog for their production of Annie. So Berloni, 19 years old at the time, agreed to take the job in exchange for a small role in the play.By the age of 20, he was a world famous animal trainer.
Nearly 40 years later, Berloni has helped countless furry friends get their chance at stardom, whether it’s in theatre, movies, or television. He and his company have spent the past thirty years training dogs and cats for Broadway productions, primarily using animals rescued from shelters. As a high schooler in 1976, Berloni had rescued an Airedale mixed breed only hours before it was slated for euthanasia. The terrier was cast as Sandy in the musical Annie and performed there for seven years. This is just one of the many dogs on stage and screen.
He’s also the only animal trainer to ever win a Tony Award.
His fame led to a reality show on the Discovery channel called, FROM WAGS TO RICHES WITH BILL BERLONI which debuted in August 2015, as part of the network’s month-long dog-themed programming event entitled “Pawgust”.
