Treat Tastings: Dog Safe Halloween Sweets

When we think of Halloween, we think of ghosts and goblins, Jack O’ Lanterns, scary and silly costumes and most importantly – candy! Us humans get to enjoy candy, but why should our furry friends get left out just because they cannot eat the same things we can? Let them join in on the Halloween candy coma by making these yummy (and gross looking) recipes below!

Ingredients needed:

  1. 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  2. 1/2 cup free or canned pumpkin (not seasoned pie filling)
  3. 1/2 cup peanut butter
  4. 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  5. 1 teaspoon baking powder
  6. 1/2 cup water as needed

  1. Preheat your oven to 350º F
  2. In a bowl: whisk together baking powder, flour, peanut butter, cinnamon and pumpkin
  3. Add water as needed – the dough should be stiff and dry.
  4. Roll the dough to .5 inch thick and cut with fun shaped cookie cutters
  5. Bake for approximately 40 minutes, or until hard.

For a silly “gross” Halloween treat – try making these “poo piles!” 😉

Ingredients needed:

  1. 1/2 cup peanut butter
  2. 1/4 cup Carob powder
  3. 2/3 cup milk
  4. 1/2 cup oatmeal
  5. 2 cups whole wheat flour

  1. Preheat the over to 325º F
  2. Combine all ingredients in a bowl until well mixed
  3. Pinch off about 1 inch of dough and roll into a ball
  4. Shape into “poo piles”
  5. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet
  6. Bake for 20 – 25 minutes or until the edges are brown
  7. Cool and refrigerate

*IMPORTANT: Many candies and sugary foods are TOXIC to dogs – please make sure that you do not feed your dog candy that you (the human) are eating. Don’t fall for those pleading eyes, your furry friends have their own set of delicious treats they can indulge on.
